Formula and Assumptions

The net pay calculation follows these steps:

  1. Calculate gross pay based on hourly rate or annual salary
  2. Apply Ontario provincial taxes (5.05% for basic personal amount)
  3. Deduct Canada Pension Plan (CPP) contributions (5.1% employer + 5.1% employee)
  4. Deduct Employment Insurance (EI) premiums (1.66% for employees)
  5. Calculate net pay after all deductions

Formula Used

Net Pay = Gross Pay - (Provincial Taxes + CPP + EI)

Gross Pay = Hourly Rate × Hours Worked or Annual Salary

Worked Example

For an annual salary of $50,000 paid weekly:

  1. Weekly gross pay: $50,000 ÷ 52 ≈ $961.54
  2. Provincial taxes: $961.54 × 5.05% ≈ $48.40
  3. CPP: $961.54 × 10.2% ≈ $98.03
  4. EI: $961.54 × 1.66% ≈ $16.00
  5. Net pay: $961.54 - ($48.40 + $98.03 + $16.00) ≈ $799.51
