Formula and Assumptions
USA Swimming uses a points system based on time standards for each event and age group. The formula for calculating points is:
Points = (Standard Time - Swim Time) × Conversion Factor
Where:
- Standard Time = Official time standard for the event
- Swim Time = Your actual swim time
- Conversion Factor = Adjustment based on event difficulty
Key assumptions:
- Points are calculated based on current USA Swimming standards
- Time standards may change annually
- Points are not transferable between different events
Worked Example
Let's calculate points for a 100 Free swim:
Example: A 16-year-old swimmer completes the 100 Free in 52.34 seconds.
The current Junior 100 Free standard is 50.00 seconds.
Calculation: (50.00 - 52.34) × 1.0 = -2.34 points
Result: The swimmer earns -2.34 points, indicating they swam slower than the standard.
Interpreting Results
Positive points indicate you swam faster than the standard. Negative points mean you swam slower. The higher your points, the better your performance relative to the standard.
Use these results to:
- Track your progress over time
- Compare with other swimmers in your age group
- Identify areas for improvement
- Qualify for higher-level competitions
