Transport Canada Fuel Consumption Calculator

Reviewed by Calculator Editorial Team

This calculator helps you determine your vehicle's fuel consumption according to Transport Canada's official standards. By entering your vehicle's details and driving conditions, you'll get an accurate estimate of your fuel efficiency.

How to Use This Calculator

To calculate your vehicle's fuel consumption:

  1. Enter the distance traveled in kilometers
  2. Select your vehicle type (gasoline, diesel, electric, or hybrid)
  3. Enter the fuel consumption rate for your vehicle (in liters per 100 km)
  4. Click "Calculate" to see your results

Note: For electric vehicles, the calculator shows energy consumption in kWh per 100 km rather than fuel consumption.

Formula Used

The calculator uses the following formula to determine fuel consumption:

Fuel Consumption = (Distance Traveled × Fuel Consumption Rate) ÷ 100

Where:

  • Fuel Consumption is measured in liters
  • Distance Traveled is in kilometers
  • Fuel Consumption Rate is in liters per 100 kilometers

For electric vehicles, the formula becomes:

Energy Consumption = (Distance Traveled × Energy Consumption Rate) ÷ 100

Where Energy Consumption is in kilowatt-hours (kWh).

Worked Example

Let's calculate the fuel consumption for a 500 km trip in a gasoline vehicle with a consumption rate of 8.5 liters per 100 km.

Fuel Consumption = (500 km × 8.5 L/100 km) ÷ 100 = 42.5 liters

This means you would use 42.5 liters of fuel for a 500 km trip in this vehicle.

Interpreting Results

The calculator provides several key metrics:

  • Fuel Consumption: Total amount of fuel used for the trip
  • Fuel Efficiency: Your vehicle's consumption rate
  • CO2 Emissions: Estimated carbon dioxide emissions based on fuel type

Comparing your results with industry standards can help you identify areas for improvement in fuel efficiency.

Typical Fuel Consumption Ranges
Vehicle Type City (L/100 km) Highway (L/100 km)
Gasoline Car 8.0-12.0 6.0-9.0
Diesel Car 6.0-10.0 5.0-8.0
Electric Car 15-25 kWh/100 km 12-20 kWh/100 km

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between fuel consumption and fuel efficiency?
Fuel consumption refers to the total amount of fuel used for a trip, while fuel efficiency is the rate at which your vehicle consumes fuel (liters per 100 km).
How accurate are the results from this calculator?
The calculator provides estimates based on the inputs you provide. For precise measurements, consult your vehicle's owner's manual or use a fuel consumption meter.
Can I use this calculator for electric vehicles?
Yes, the calculator includes options for electric vehicles and shows energy consumption in kWh per 100 km.
How do I improve my vehicle's fuel efficiency?
Regular maintenance, proper tire pressure, smooth driving, and avoiding excessive idling can all help improve fuel efficiency.
Does this calculator account for different driving conditions?
The calculator provides estimates based on your inputs. For more accurate results, consider using a fuel consumption meter that accounts for real-world driving conditions.
