Formula Used

The calculator uses the following formula to calculate total paid hours:

Total Paid Hours = (Shift End Time - Shift Start Time) - Σ(Unpaid Break Durations)

Where Σ(Unpaid Break Durations) is the sum of all unpaid break periods. Paid breaks are not subtracted from the total hours worked.

Worked Example

Let's say you work from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with two breaks:

  • Break 1: 10:00 AM - 10:30 AM (paid)
  • Break 2: 2:00 PM - 2:15 PM (unpaid)

Total shift duration: 9 hours

Total break time: 45 minutes (15 minutes paid + 30 minutes unpaid)

Total paid hours: 8.25 hours (9 hours - 0.75 hours unpaid break)
