Types of Ontario Statutory Holidays
Ontario has several statutory holidays that are observed by most businesses and government offices. These include:
- New Year's Day - January 1st
- Family Day - Third Monday in February
- Good Friday - Friday before Easter Sunday
- Victoria Day - Monday before May 25th
- Canada Day - July 1st
- Labour Day - First Monday in September
- Thanksgiving - Second Monday in October
- Christmas Day - December 25th
- Boxing Day - December 26th
Note: Some holidays may be observed on different dates if they fall on a weekend. The calculator accounts for these adjustments.
Calculation Method
The calculator uses the following method to determine holiday dates:
- For fixed-date holidays (New Year's Day, Canada Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day), the date is simply January 1st, July 1st, December 25th, and December 26th respectively.
- For floating holidays (Family Day, Victoria Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving), the calculator uses the following rules:
- Family Day is the third Monday in February
- Victoria Day is the Monday before May 25th
- Labour Day is the first Monday in September
- Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October
- Good Friday is calculated based on the Easter date for the given year.
- If any holiday falls on a weekend, it is observed on the nearest business day (Friday for Saturday, Monday for Sunday).
Formula for Easter Sunday: The calculator uses the Meeus/Jones/Butcher algorithm to calculate Easter Sunday for any given year.
