Propane Gas Consumption Calculator
Propane is a versatile fuel used for heating, cooking, and powering equipment. Understanding your propane consumption helps manage costs and ensure adequate supply. This calculator estimates propane usage based on your specific needs and equipment efficiency.
How to Use This Calculator
To calculate your propane gas consumption:
- Enter the total BTU (British Thermal Unit) requirement for your application
- Select the efficiency rating of your propane equipment (if known)
- Click "Calculate" to see your estimated propane consumption
The calculator provides results in gallons and pounds, along with a cost estimate if you provide your local propane price.
Formula Used
The propane consumption is calculated using the following formula:
Propane Consumption (gallons) = (Total BTU ÷ Equipment Efficiency) ÷ 91,300
Where:
- Total BTU is the heating requirement in British Thermal Units
- Equipment Efficiency is the percentage of energy your system can use (typically 70-90%)
- 91,300 is the conversion factor from BTU to gallons of propane
For weight calculation, we use 6.1 pounds per gallon of propane.
Worked Examples
Example 1: Heating a 1,000 sq ft home
For a 1,000 sq ft home requiring 100,000 BTU and using 80% efficient equipment:
Calculation: (100,000 ÷ 0.8) ÷ 91,300 = 13.1 gallons
This would cost approximately $52.40 at $4.00 per gallon.
Example 2: Cooking with a propane grill
For a grill requiring 20,000 BTU and using 75% efficient burners:
Calculation: (20,000 ÷ 0.75) ÷ 91,300 = 2.7 gallons
This would cost approximately $10.80 at $4.00 per gallon.
| Application | BTU Requirement | Equipment Efficiency | Propane Needed (gallons) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heating 1,000 sq ft home | 100,000 | 80% | 13.1 |
| Cooking with grill | 20,000 | 75% | 2.7 |
| Space heater | 5,000 | 70% | 0.6 |
