Ontario Payroll Taxes 2023
Ontario payroll taxes include federal and provincial income taxes, Canada Pension Plan (CPP), Employment Insurance (EI), and other deductions. The exact amount of each tax depends on the employee's gross salary and pay frequency.
Federal Income Tax
The federal income tax rate for 2023 is progressive, meaning the rate increases as the employee's taxable income increases. The rates are:
- 15% on the first $53,359 of taxable income
- 20.5% on the next $53,360 to $106,717
- 26% on the next $53,360 to $213,430
- 29% on taxable income over $213,430
Ontario Provincial Tax
The Ontario provincial tax rate for 2023 is also progressive:
- 5.05% on the first $45,142 of taxable income
- 9.15% on the next $45,142 to $90,287
- 11.16% on the next $45,142 to $150,000
- 12.16% on the next $45,142 to $220,000
- 13.16% on taxable income over $220,000
Canada Pension Plan (CPP)
The CPP contribution rate is 5.95% of the employee's earnings, with a maximum contribution of $3,560.50 per year.
Employment Insurance (EI)
The EI premium rate is 1.66% of the employee's earnings, with a maximum contribution of $853.50 per year.
How Payroll Taxes Are Calculated
The total payroll cost is calculated by adding the gross salary to all applicable deductions. The formula is:
