How Paternity Leave is Calculated
In Ontario, paternity leave benefits are calculated based on your average weekly earnings and the number of weeks you've worked. The standard entitlement is:
- Up to 10 weeks of paid leave for full-time employees.
- Pro-rated leave for part-time employees based on hours worked.
Formula Used
Paternity Leave Benefits = (Average Weekly Earnings × Number of Eligible Weeks) × 0.85
The 0.85 multiplier accounts for the 15% reduction in pay during paternity leave.
For example, if you earn $1,200 per week and have worked 52 weeks, your paternity leave benefits would be calculated as:
$1,200 × 10 × 0.85 = $10,200
Benefits and Pay Rates
Ontario paternity leave provides:
- Up to 10 weeks of paid leave.
- 85% of your average weekly earnings during the leave.
- 15% reduction in pay during the leave period.
The maximum benefit amount is based on Ontario's maximum weekly earnings limit. For the most current rates, refer to the Ontario government website.
