How the Ontario Weekly Tax Calculator Works

Ontario's tax system is progressive, meaning your tax rate increases as your income rises. This calculator estimates your weekly tax liability based on your gross weekly earnings. It accounts for federal and provincial income tax, Canada Pension Plan (CPP), and Employment Insurance (EI) deductions.

Key Features

  • Calculates federal and provincial income tax
  • Accounts for CPP and EI deductions
  • Provides net weekly take-home pay
  • Visual breakdown of deductions

This calculator provides estimates only. For exact tax figures, consult a tax professional or use the Canada Revenue Agency's official tax calculator.

Tax Calculation Formula

The calculator uses the following steps to determine your weekly tax:

Step 1: Calculate Federal Tax

Federal tax is calculated using Ontario's federal tax brackets (as of 2023):

  • 15% on the first $53,359 of taxable income
  • Additional 20.5% on the portion over $53,359

Step 2: Calculate Provincial Tax

Provincial tax is calculated using Ontario's provincial tax brackets (as of 2023):

  • 5.05% on the first $49,231 of taxable income
  • 9.15% on the portion between $49,231 and $98,462
  • 11.16% on the portion between $98,462 and $150,000
  • 12.16% on the portion between $150,000 and $220,000
  • 13.16% on amounts over $220,000

Step 3: Calculate CPP and EI

CPP is calculated at 5.95% of earnings up to $62,700, and EI is calculated at 1.66% of earnings up to $57,400.

Step 4: Calculate Net Pay

Net pay = Gross pay - (Federal tax + Provincial tax + CPP + EI)

The calculator converts your weekly earnings to annual figures for tax calculations, then returns the results in weekly amounts.

Example Calculation

Let's calculate taxes for someone earning $1,200 per week:

Calculation Amount
Annual Gross Income $62,400
Federal Tax $7,300
Provincial Tax $4,200
CPP $3,600
EI $1,000
Total Deductions $16,100
Annual Net Income $46,300
Weekly Net Income $888.46

This example shows that someone earning $1,200 per week would take home approximately $888.46 after taxes and deductions.
