How Ontario Public Holiday Pay Works
In Ontario, public holidays are days when most businesses and government offices are closed. Employees who work on these days are entitled to special pay under the Employment Standards Act, 2000.
Regular Holiday Pay
For the first 8 hours worked on a public holiday, employees earn their regular hourly wage plus 50% of their regular wage.
Regular Holiday Pay Formula
Regular Holiday Pay = (Hourly Wage × 1.5) × Hours Worked
Overtime Holiday Pay
For any hours worked beyond 8 on a public holiday, employees earn their regular hourly wage plus 1.5 times their regular wage (time and a half).
Overtime Holiday Pay Formula
Overtime Holiday Pay = (Hourly Wage × 2.5) × (Hours Worked - 8)
Total Holiday Pay
The total holiday pay is the sum of regular holiday pay and overtime holiday pay.
Total Holiday Pay Formula
Total Holiday Pay = Regular Holiday Pay + Overtime Holiday Pay
Note: Employees must be scheduled to work on the holiday to be eligible for holiday pay. Employees who are not scheduled to work but are required to work due to an emergency may be entitled to additional pay.
Worked Examples
Example 1: 8-Hour Shift
If you earn $20 per hour and work 8 hours on a public holiday:
- Regular Holiday Pay = ($20 × 1.5) × 8 = $240
- Overtime Holiday Pay = $0 (since no hours beyond 8 were worked)
- Total Holiday Pay = $240 + $0 = $240
Example 2: 12-Hour Shift
If you earn $25 per hour and work 12 hours on a public holiday:
- Regular Holiday Pay = ($25 × 1.5) × 8 = $300
- Overtime Holiday Pay = ($25 × 2.5) × (12 - 8) = $150
- Total Holiday Pay = $300 + $150 = $450
| Hourly Wage | Hours Worked | Regular Holiday Pay | Overtime Holiday Pay | Total Holiday Pay |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $15 | 8 | $180 | $0 | $180 |
| $15 | 10 | $180 | $75 | $255 |
