How Ontario Tax Is Calculated
The Ontario tax calculation follows these steps:
- Determine which tax bracket your income falls into
- Calculate tax for the first portion of your income at the lowest rate
- Add tax for each subsequent portion at the appropriate higher rate
- Sum all portions to get your total provincial tax
Formula Used
Tax = (Income × Rate1) + [(Income - Threshold1) × Rate2] + ...
Example Calculation
Let's calculate tax for someone earning $100,000:
- $48,535 × 5.05% = $2,439.38
- ($97,069 - $48,535) × 9.15% = $4,450.61
- ($100,000 - $97,069) × 11.16% = $296.01
- Total tax = $2,439.38 + $4,450.61 + $296.01 = $7,186.00
This person would owe approximately $7,186 in Ontario provincial tax.
