How Ontario Tax Is Calculated

The Ontario tax calculation follows these steps:

  1. Determine which tax bracket your income falls into
  2. Calculate tax for the first portion of your income at the lowest rate
  3. Add tax for each subsequent portion at the appropriate higher rate
  4. Sum all portions to get your total provincial tax

Formula Used

Tax = (Income × Rate1) + [(Income - Threshold1) × Rate2] + ...

Example Calculation

Let's calculate tax for someone earning $100,000:

  1. $48,535 × 5.05% = $2,439.38
  2. ($97,069 - $48,535) × 9.15% = $4,450.61
  3. ($100,000 - $97,069) × 11.16% = $296.01
  4. Total tax = $2,439.38 + $4,450.61 + $296.01 = $7,186.00

This person would owe approximately $7,186 in Ontario provincial tax.
