How Monopoly Money Works

In Monopoly, your monetary value is determined by the properties you own and the improvements on them. Each property has a specific monetary value, and each house or hotel adds to that value.

The standard Monopoly property values are:

  • Brown properties: $60 each
  • Light Blue properties: $100 each
  • Pink properties: $140 each
  • Orange properties: $180 each
  • Red properties: $220 each
  • Yellow properties: $260 each
  • Green properties: $300 each
  • Dark Blue properties: $350 each

Each house adds $50 to the value of a property, and a hotel (which replaces 4 houses) adds $200.

Total Value = (Number of Properties × Property Value) + (Number of Houses × $50) + (Number of Hotels × $200)

For example, owning 2 properties in the Brown group with 1 house and 1 hotel on each would be calculated as:

(2 × $60) + (1 × $50) + (1 × $200) = $120 + $50 + $200 = $370

Worked Examples

Example 1: Basic Properties

You own 1 property in the Light Blue group and 1 property in the Pink group. No houses or hotels.

Calculation: (1 × $100) + (1 × $140) = $240

Total monetary value: $240

Example 2: Properties with Houses

You own 2 properties in the Orange group, each with 2 houses.

Calculation: (2 × $180) + (4 × $50) = $360 + $200 = $560

Total monetary value: $560

Example 3: Mixed Properties

You own 1 property in the Red group with 3 houses, 1 property in the Yellow group with 1 hotel, and 1 property in the Green group with no improvements.

Calculation: (1 × $220) + (3 × $50) + (1 × $260) + (1 × $200) + (1 × $300) = $220 + $150 + $260 + $200 + $300 = $1,130

Total monetary value: $1,130
