Current Minimum Wage Rates in Ontario

As of January 1, 2024, the minimum wage in Ontario is:

• $14.25 per hour for general employees
• $15.55 per hour for employees working in certain industries (e.g., hospitality, retail)
• $16.65 per hour for employees working in certain industries (e.g., food service, cleaning)

These rates are subject to change and should be verified with the Ontario government's official sources.

Overtime Calculation

In Ontario, overtime is calculated as 1.5 times the regular hourly rate for hours worked beyond 44 hours in a week.

For example, if an employee works 50 hours in a week at $14.25 per hour:

• Regular pay for 44 hours: $14.25 × 44 = $624.20
• Overtime pay for 6 hours: ($14.25 × 1.5) × 6 = $127.50
• Total weekly pay: $624.20 + $127.50 = $751.70

Example 1: Full-time Employee

An employee works 40 hours per week in a general job category.

• Hourly rate: $14.25
• Weekly pay: $14.25 × 40 = $570.00

Example 2: Part-time Employee with Overtime

An employee works 48 hours per week in a hospitality job.

• Hourly rate: $15.55
• Regular pay for 44 hours: $15.55 × 44 = $683.20
• Overtime pay for 4 hours: ($15.55 × 1.5) × 4 = $93.40
• Total weekly pay: $683.20 + $93.40 = $776.60
