What is MAT Leave in Ontario?

Maternity Leave (MAT Leave) is a benefit provided by the Ontario government to eligible employees who have recently given birth. It provides partial salary replacement and allows mothers to bond with their newborn.

The Ontario government offers two types of MAT Leave:

  • Standard MAT Leave: 18 weeks of partial salary replacement
  • Extended MAT Leave: Additional 14 weeks of partial salary replacement for employees with 20 or more years of service

Key Information

MAT Leave is not a job-protected leave. Employees must have worked at least 12 months with their employer to be eligible. The benefit is taxable and must be repaid if the employee leaves employment before completing the leave period.

How to Calculate MAT Leave Benefits

Your MAT Leave benefits are calculated based on your average weekly earnings and the number of weeks you take leave. Here's how it works:

Calculation Formula

Standard MAT Leave: (Average weekly earnings × 0.55) × Number of weeks

Extended MAT Leave: (Average weekly earnings × 0.55) × 32 weeks

Note: The 0.55 multiplier is the standard replacement rate for MAT Leave in Ontario.

To calculate your benefits:

  1. Determine your average weekly earnings over the 52 weeks before the start of your MAT Leave
  2. Multiply by 0.55 to get your weekly benefit amount
  3. Multiply by the number of weeks you take (up to 32 weeks total)

The maximum benefit amount for Standard MAT Leave is $1,100 per week. For Extended MAT Leave, it's $1,100 per week for the first 18 weeks and $1,100 per week for the additional 14 weeks.

Example Calculation

Let's say you earn $1,200 per week and want to take 22 weeks of Standard MAT Leave:

  1. Average weekly earnings: $1,200
  2. Weekly benefit: $1,200 × 0.55 = $660
  3. Total benefit: $660 × 22 weeks = $14,520

Your total MAT Leave benefit would be $14,520 for 22 weeks.

MAT Leave Benefit Calculation Example
Weekly Earnings Leave Type Weeks Taken Weekly Benefit Total Benefit
$1,200 Standard 22 $660 $14,520
$1,500 Extended 32 $825 $26,400
