International Salary Calculator Cost of Living Comparison
Comparing salaries across countries requires adjusting for the significant differences in cost of living. This calculator helps you understand how your salary in one country compares to another, taking into account local expenses.
How to Use This Calculator
To compare your salary across countries:
- Enter your monthly salary in your home country
- Select your home country from the dropdown list
- Select the country you want to compare to
- Click "Calculate" to see the adjusted salary
The calculator will show you how much your salary would be worth in the comparison country, adjusted for cost of living differences.
Formula Used
Salary Adjustment Formula
The adjusted salary is calculated using the following formula:
Adjusted Salary = (Original Salary × Cost of Living Index of Home Country) ÷ Cost of Living Index of Comparison Country
Where the Cost of Living Index is based on the Numbeo Cost of Living Index, which measures the relative cost of living in different countries.
This formula accounts for the fact that a dollar in a country with a high cost of living buys less than a dollar in a country with a lower cost of living.
Worked Example
Let's say you earn $3,000 per month in New York, USA (Cost of Living Index = 150) and want to compare it to Tokyo, Japan (Cost of Living Index = 100):
- Original Salary = $3,000
- Home Country Index = 150
- Comparison Country Index = 100
- Adjusted Salary = ($3,000 × 150) ÷ 100 = $4,500
This means your $3,000 salary in New York would be equivalent to approximately $4,500 in Tokyo, adjusted for cost of living differences.
Interpreting Results
The adjusted salary shows how much your salary would be worth in the comparison country if you moved there. A higher adjusted salary means your purchasing power would increase, while a lower adjusted salary means your purchasing power would decrease.
Keep in mind that this is a simplified comparison and doesn't account for other factors like taxes, housing availability, or quality of life differences.
Important Note
Cost of living indices are based on average data and may not reflect your specific living situation. Always research specific cities and neighborhoods for more accurate comparisons.
