Formula Used

The electricity consumption is calculated using the following formula:

Daily Consumption (kWh) = (Power Rating × Hours Used) / 1000

Monthly Consumption (kWh) = Daily Consumption × 30

Monthly Cost (LKR) = Monthly Consumption × Rate per kWh

Where:

  • Power Rating is the wattage of the appliance
  • Hours Used is the number of hours the appliance is used daily
  • Rate per kWh is the current electricity rate in Sri Lanka (approximately 30 LKR/kWh)

Worked Example

Let's calculate the electricity consumption for a typical household in Sri Lanka:

Example Calculation

Appliances and their usage:

  • Fridge (500W) - 24 hours/day
  • TV (100W) - 5 hours/day
  • Fan (75W) - 8 hours/day
  • Lighting (60W) - 4 hours/day

Calculation:

Daily Consumption = (500×24 + 100×5 + 75×8 + 60×4)/1000 = 120 + 5 + 6 + 2.4 = 133.4 kWh/day

Monthly Consumption = 133.4 × 30 = 4002 kWh/month

Monthly Cost = 4002 × 30 = 120,060 LKR
