How to Use This Calculator
To calculate your Ontario electricity bill:
- Enter your monthly electricity usage in kilowatt-hours (kWh)
- Select your electricity plan type (Time of Use or Standard)
- If using Time of Use, enter your usage breakdown for On-Peak, Mid-Peak, and Off-Peak periods
- Click "Calculate" to see your estimated monthly bill
The calculator will display your estimated monthly cost, including the Ontario Energy Charge and the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) fee.
Formula Used
The electricity bill is calculated using the following formula:
Where:
- Energy Charge = Usage × Rate
- OPA Fee = $12.24 per month (as of 2023)
- HST = 13% provincial sales tax
For Time of Use plans, the Energy Charge is calculated separately for each rate period.
Worked Example
Let's calculate a monthly bill for a Standard plan with 500 kWh of usage at $0.12/kWh:
