Formula Used

The electricity bill is calculated using the following formula:

Total Bill = (Energy Charge + OPA Fee) × 1.13 (HST)

Where:

  • Energy Charge = Usage × Rate
  • OPA Fee = $12.24 per month (as of 2023)
  • HST = 13% provincial sales tax

For Time of Use plans, the Energy Charge is calculated separately for each rate period.

Worked Example

Let's calculate a monthly bill for a Standard plan with 500 kWh of usage at $0.12/kWh:

Energy Charge = 500 kWh × $0.12/kWh = $60.00 OPA Fee = $12.24 Subtotal = $60.00 + $12.24 = $72.24 Total Bill = $72.24 × 1.13 = $81.57

Your estimated monthly bill would be $81.57.
