E5 Dnd Health Calculator
This calculator helps you determine your Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition character's health points (HP) based on your character class, level, and constitution modifier. Understanding your character's HP is crucial for survival in combat and long-term campaign health.
How to Use This Calculator
To calculate your character's health points:
- Select your character class from the dropdown menu.
- Enter your character level (1-20).
- Enter your constitution modifier (typically between -5 and +6).
- Click "Calculate" to see your results.
The calculator will display your maximum HP at the current level, your average HP per level, and your total HP at the specified level.
Formula Used
The base HP calculation follows these rules:
Maximum HP at Level 1: Class Hit Die + Constitution Modifier
Maximum HP at Higher Levels: (Hit Die / 2 + 1) + Constitution Modifier per level
Total HP at Current Level: Sum of all HP gains from level 1 to current level
Each class has a different hit die size:
- Barbarian, Fighter, Paladin, Ranger: 1d12
- Bard, Cleric, Druid, Monk, Rogue, Warlock: 1d8
- Sorcerer, Wizard: 1d6
Worked Example
Let's calculate the HP for a level 5 Fighter with a +3 constitution modifier:
- Level 1: 12 (1d12) + 3 = 15 HP
- Level 2: 7 (1d12/2 + 1) + 3 = 10 HP
- Level 3: 7 + 3 = 10 HP
- Level 4: 7 + 3 = 10 HP
- Level 5: 7 + 3 = 10 HP
Total HP at level 5: 15 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 55 HP
Note: This is the maximum HP your character can have. Actual HP in combat may be lower due to damage taken.
Character Class HP Progression
Here's a comparison of HP progression for different classes at level 5:
| Class | Hit Die | Con Mod | Total HP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fighter | 1d12 | +3 | 55 |
| Ranger | 1d10 | +3 | 48 |
| Paladin | 1d10 | +3 | 48 |
| Bard | 1d8 | +3 | 38 |
| Cleric | 1d8 | +3 | 38 |
