Dnd Health Level Up Calculator

Reviewed by Calculator Editorial Team

When your Dungeons & Dragons character levels up, their hit points increase based on their class and Constitution modifier. This calculator helps you determine exactly how many hit points your character gains at each level.

How to Use This Calculator

To calculate your character's hit points after leveling up:

  1. Enter your character's current level (before leveling up)
  2. Select your character class from the dropdown
  3. Enter your Constitution modifier (including the + sign)
  4. Click "Calculate" to see your new hit points

The calculator will show you the exact hit points your character gains at the new level, as well as the total hit points after leveling up.

HP Calculation Formula

The formula for calculating hit points when leveling up is:

New Hit Points = (Hit Dice × Level) + (Constitution Modifier × Level)

Where:

  • Hit Dice is the number of hit dice your class rolls (d8 for most classes, d10 for Warlocks, etc.)
  • Level is your character's new level after gaining a level
  • Constitution Modifier is your character's Constitution modifier (including the + sign)

For example, a level 3 Fighter with a +2 Constitution modifier would gain:

New Hit Points = (8 × 3) + (2 × 3) = 24 + 6 = 30

Character Level Progression

Here's a table showing how hit points increase for different classes at each level:

Level Fighter (d10) Rogue (d8) Wizard (d6)
1 10 + Con 8 + Con 6 + Con
2 10 + Con + (10 + Con) 8 + Con + (8 + Con) 6 + Con + (6 + Con)
3 10 + Con + (10 + Con) + (10 + Con) 8 + Con + (8 + Con) + (8 + Con) 6 + Con + (6 + Con) + (6 + Con)
4 10 + Con + (10 + Con) + (10 + Con) + (10 + Con) 8 + Con + (8 + Con) + (8 + Con) + (8 + Con) 6 + Con + (6 + Con) + (6 + Con) + (6 + Con)
5 10 + Con + (10 + Con) × 4 8 + Con + (8 + Con) × 4 6 + Con + (6 + Con) × 4

Note: This table shows the total hit points at each level, not just the increase from leveling up.

Worked Example

Let's calculate the hit points for a level 4 Fighter with a +3 Constitution modifier:

  1. First level: 10 + 3 = 13 HP
  2. Second level: 10 + 3 = 13 HP (total 26)
  3. Third level: 10 + 3 = 13 HP (total 39)
  4. Fourth level: 10 + 3 = 13 HP (total 52)

Using the formula: (10 × 4) + (3 × 4) = 40 + 12 = 52 total hit points.

Remember that hit points are rolled randomly when your character levels up, but this calculator gives you the average value.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my Constitution modifier?

Your Constitution modifier is calculated by subtracting 10 from your Constitution score, then dividing by 2 (rounding down). For example, a Constitution score of 16 gives a +3 modifier.

Does this calculator work for all D&D editions?

This calculator uses the 5th Edition rules. For other editions, you would need to adjust the hit dice values accordingly.

Can I use this calculator for monsters?

This calculator is designed for player characters. Monster hit points are calculated differently and would require a different formula.

What if my character has a multiclass feature that changes hit dice?

Multiclass characters use the hit dice of their primary class for leveling up. You would need to adjust the class selection accordingly.
