Reviewed by Calculator Editorial Team

This D&D 5e health calculator helps you determine hit points for characters, monsters, and NPCs using official rules. Simply input your character's level, constitution modifier, and hit dice, then calculate to see your total hit points.

How to Use This Calculator

To calculate your character's hit points:

  1. Enter your character's level (1-20)
  2. Input your constitution modifier (e.g., +2)
  3. Select your hit dice type (d6, d8, d10, or d12)
  4. Click "Calculate" to see your total hit points

The calculator will show your base hit points plus constitution modifier for each level, plus your hit dice roll for the first level.

Formula Used

The official D&D 5e hit point calculation formula is:

Hit Points = (Hit Dice × Level) + (Constitution Modifier × Level)

For the first level, you also add your hit dice roll (1dX + Constitution Modifier).

Note: This calculator uses the standard array method for constitution modifiers. For point-buy or custom modifiers, adjust accordingly.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Level 5 Fighter

Character details:

  • Level: 5
  • Constitution Modifier: +3
  • Hit Dice: d10

Calculation:

(10 × 5) + (3 × 5) = 50 + 15 = 65 hit points

For the first level, you would also add 1d10 + 3 = 13 (example roll), making the total 78 hit points.

Example 2: Level 3 Rogue

Character details:

  • Level: 3
  • Constitution Modifier: +1
  • Hit Dice: d8

Calculation:

(8 × 3) + (1 × 3) = 24 + 3 = 27 hit points

For the first level, you would also add 1d8 + 1 = 9 (example roll), making the total 36 hit points.
