Degrees of Success Dark Heresy Calculator

Reviewed by Calculator Editorial Team

In the Dark Heresy role-playing game, Degrees of Success (DoS) determine how well a character performs an action. This calculator helps you determine the outcome of dice rolls based on your character's skill level and modifiers.

How to Use This Calculator

To calculate your Degrees of Success:

  1. Enter your character's skill level (0-10)
  2. Select the difficulty level (Easy, Average, Hard, Very Hard)
  3. Add any relevant modifiers (positive or negative)
  4. Click "Calculate" to see your result

The calculator will show you the number of dice you need to roll and the target number to achieve each Degree of Success.

Calculation Method

The Degrees of Success are calculated using the following formula:

Degrees of Success = (Skill Level + Modifiers) - Difficulty Level

Where:

  • Skill Level: Your character's skill rating (0-10)
  • Modifiers: Any bonuses or penalties (positive or negative)
  • Difficulty Level: The challenge level (Easy = 2, Average = 4, Hard = 6, Very Hard = 8)

For each Degree of Success, you need to roll a D10 and achieve a result equal to or higher than the target number.

Example Calculation

Let's say your character has a skill level of 6, you're facing an Average difficulty (4), and you have a +2 modifier:

Degrees of Success = (6 + 2) - 4 = 4

This means you need to roll 4 D10s and achieve a result of 6 or higher on each die to succeed.

Interpreting Results

The calculator will show you:

  • Degrees of Success: The number of dice you need to roll
  • Target Number: The minimum result needed on each die
  • Success Chance: An estimate of your probability of success

Remember that in Dark Heresy, you must achieve the target number on all your dice to succeed. If you fail any die, you must roll again with the same target number.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Degrees of Success and Success Levels?
Degrees of Success refers to the number of dice you need to roll, while Success Levels refer to the quality of your result (e.g., 1-3 = Partial Success, 4-6 = Success, 7+ = Exceptional Success).
How do I calculate the target number for each Degree of Success?
The target number is calculated as 10 minus your Degrees of Success. For example, if you have 4 Degrees of Success, your target number is 6.
What happens if I roll a 1 on a die?
Rolling a 1 is always a failure, regardless of the target number. This represents a critical failure in Dark Heresy.
