Datamasters Cost of Living Calculator
Comparing salaries across different cities can be challenging due to varying costs of living. Our DataMasters Cost of Living Calculator helps you adjust salaries based on local expenses, giving you a fairer comparison between job offers in different locations.
How to Use This Calculator
To use the DataMasters Cost of Living Calculator:
- Enter your current salary or the salary you want to compare
- Select the city where the salary is based
- Choose the city you want to compare it to
- Click "Calculate" to see the adjusted salary
The calculator will show you how much you'd need to earn in the second city to maintain the same standard of living as in the first city.
Formula Used
The cost of living adjustment is calculated using the following formula:
Adjusted Salary = (Original Salary × Cost of Living Index of Target City) ÷ Cost of Living Index of Original City
Where:
- Original Salary is the salary you want to compare
- Cost of Living Index is a numerical value representing the relative cost of living in each city
Note: Cost of living indices are based on average data and may not reflect your exact personal expenses. The calculator provides an estimate for comparison purposes only.
Worked Example
Let's say you have a job offer in New York with a salary of $80,000. You're considering a similar position in Austin with a lower salary offer. Here's how to use the calculator:
- Enter $80,000 as your original salary
- Select New York as the original city
- Select Austin as the target city
- Click "Calculate"
The calculator might show that you'd need to earn approximately $65,000 in Austin to maintain the same standard of living as $80,000 in New York.
Interpreting Results
The adjusted salary represents what you'd need to earn in the target city to maintain the same purchasing power as your original salary. Here's what the results mean:
- If the adjusted salary is higher than your current offer, the target city is more expensive
- If the adjusted salary is lower, the target city is less expensive
- The difference between your current offer and the adjusted salary shows how much more or less you'd need to earn
Remember that this is an estimate based on average data. Your actual expenses may vary based on your personal lifestyle and circumstances.
