Reviewed by Calculator Editorial Team

Compare the cost of living between two locations using this variance calculator. Enter the cost of essential items in each location to see how much more or less expensive one area is compared to the other.

How to Use This Calculator

To calculate the cost of living variance between two locations:

  1. Enter the cost of essential items in Location 1 (e.g., rent, groceries, utilities).
  2. Enter the cost of the same items in Location 2.
  3. Click "Calculate" to see the variance percentage.
  4. Review the result and chart to understand affordability differences.

The calculator shows you how much more or less expensive Location 2 is compared to Location 1, expressed as a percentage variance.

Formula Used

The cost of living variance is calculated using the following formula:

Variance = [(Total Cost Location 2 - Total Cost Location 1) / Total Cost Location 1] × 100

Where:

  • Total Cost Location 1 = Sum of all costs in Location 1
  • Total Cost Location 2 = Sum of all costs in Location 2

A positive result means Location 2 is more expensive, while a negative result means it's less expensive.

Worked Example

Suppose you're comparing New York City (Location 1) and Chicago (Location 2).

For essential items:

  • Rent: $2,000/month in NYC, $1,500/month in Chicago
  • Groceries: $500/month in NYC, $400/month in Chicago
  • Utilities: $200/month in NYC, $150/month in Chicago

Total Cost NYC = $2,000 + $500 + $200 = $2,700

Total Cost Chicago = $1,500 + $400 + $150 = $2,050

Variance = [($2,050 - $2,700) / $2,700] × 100 = -22.22%

This means Chicago is 22.22% less expensive than New York City for these essential items.

Interpreting Results

The variance percentage tells you how much more or less expensive Location 2 is compared to Location 1. Consider these factors when interpreting results:

  • Positive variance: Location 2 is more expensive
  • Negative variance: Location 2 is less expensive
  • Magnitude of variance: Larger absolute values indicate bigger differences

Note

This calculator provides a general comparison. Actual affordability may vary based on individual circumstances and additional costs not included in the calculation.

FAQ

What items should I include in the calculation?
Include essential expenses like rent, groceries, utilities, transportation, and healthcare. The more comprehensive your data, the more accurate the comparison.
Can I compare cities in different countries?
Yes, you can compare locations in different countries. Just ensure you're comparing similar items and using the same currency for accurate results.
How do I adjust for different currencies?
Convert all costs to the same currency using current exchange rates before entering them into the calculator.
What if I don't have exact numbers for all items?
Use estimates based on average costs in each location. The calculator will still provide a useful comparison.
How often should I recalculate the variance?
Recalculate whenever costs change significantly or when comparing new locations. Cost of living can change over time.
