Formula Used

The cost of living index is calculated using the following formula:

Cost of Living Index = Σ (Weight × (City Expense / Reference Expense)) Where: - Σ = Sum of all categories - Weight = Relative importance of each category - City Expense = Monthly expense in the selected city - Reference Expense = Average monthly expense in the reference city

We use a weighted average approach where housing, food, transportation, and utilities are given higher weights as they represent the largest portion of household expenses.

Worked Example

Let's calculate the cost of living index for a hypothetical city compared to New York City (our reference city):

Category Weight City Expense NYC Expense Ratio
Housing 0.4 $1,200 $2,500 0.48
Food 0.2 $400 $600 0.67
Transportation 0.2 $200 $300 0.67
Utilities 0.1 $100 $150 0.67
Healthcare 0.1 $150 $200 0.75

Calculating the index:

Cost of Living Index = (0.4 × 0.48) + (0.2 × 0.67) + (0.2 × 0.67) + (0.1 × 0.67) + (0.1 × 0.75) = 0.192 + 0.134 + 0.134 + 0.067 + 0.075 = 0.602

This means the hypothetical city is 60.2% as expensive as New York City, making it 39.8% more affordable.

Interpreting Results

The cost of living index provides several key insights:

  • A higher index means higher costs relative to the reference city
  • An index of 1.0 means the city has the same cost of living as the reference city
  • An index below 1.0 indicates the city is more affordable

Use this information to compare cities, plan your budget, or make relocation decisions. Remember that this is a general guide and actual expenses may vary based on individual circumstances.

Note: The reference city for our calculations is New York City. We use this as a benchmark to compare costs across different locations.
