Formula and Assumptions

The cost of living index is calculated using the following formula:

Cost of Living Index = (Sum of Expenses in Comparison County) / (Sum of Expenses in Current County)

We use the following assumptions in our calculations:

  • All expenses are monthly amounts
  • We use the most recent available data for each county
  • Housing costs include rent or mortgage payments
  • Transportation costs include both public transit and vehicle expenses

Worked Example

Let's say you live in Los Angeles County and your monthly expenses are:

Category Amount ($)
Housing 2,500
Groceries 400
Transportation 300
Utilities 200
Total 3,400

You want to compare this to San Francisco County where expenses are:

Category Amount ($)
Housing 3,200
Groceries 450
Transportation 350
Utilities 250
Total 4,250

The cost of living index would be calculated as:

Cost of Living Index = 4,250 / 3,400 = 1.25

This means you'd need to earn 25% more in San Francisco County to maintain the same standard of living as in Los Angeles County.

Interpreting Results

The cost of living index tells you how much more or less you'd need to earn in the comparison county to maintain the same standard of living. Here's how to interpret the results:

  • A cost of living index of 1 means the counties have the same cost of living
  • An index greater than 1 means the comparison county is more expensive
  • An index less than 1 means the comparison county is less expensive

Remember that this calculator provides an estimate. Actual costs may vary based on individual circumstances and specific locations within the county.
