Introduction
New York City is known for its high cost of living, but the expenses vary significantly between its five boroughs. Manhattan is often the most expensive, while Staten Island tends to be more affordable. The cost of living index is calculated based on factors such as housing, transportation, groceries, utilities, and healthcare. Each borough is assigned a score relative to the national average, with 100 being the national average and higher numbers indicating a more expensive cost of living.

Formula Used
The cost of living index is calculated using the following formula:
Cost of Living Index = (Housing Weight × Housing Index) + (Transportation Weight × Transportation Index) + (Groceries Weight × Groceries Index) + (Utilities Weight × Utilities Index) + (Healthcare Weight × Healthcare Index)
Where:
- Housing Weight = 30%
- Transportation Weight = 20%
- Groceries Weight = 15%
- Utilities Weight = 10%
- Healthcare Weight = 25%
The indices for each category are based on the average cost of living in each borough relative to the national average.
Worked Example
Let's calculate the cost of living index for a person living in Manhattan with the following monthly expenses:
- Housing: $3,000
- Transportation: $300
- Groceries: $500
- Utilities: $200
- Healthcare: $400
Using the formula:
Cost of Living Index = (0.30 × 150) + (0.20 × 120) + (0.15 × 100) + (0.10 × 110) + (0.25 × 130)
= 45 + 24 + 15 + 11 + 32.5
= 127.5
This means the cost of living in Manhattan is 27.5% higher than the national average.

The following table shows the average cost of living indices for each borough:
| Borough | Cost of Living Index | Relative to National Average |

| Queens | 120 | 20% higher |
