Calorie Consumption to Maintain Weight Calculator
This calculator helps you determine the number of calories you need to consume daily to maintain your current weight. Understanding your maintenance calories is essential for effective weight management, whether you're looking to lose weight, gain muscle, or simply maintain your current physique.
How to Use This Calculator
To calculate your maintenance calories, follow these simple steps:
- Enter your age in years
- Select your gender (male or female)
- Enter your weight in pounds
- Enter your height in inches
- Select your activity level from the dropdown menu
- Click the "Calculate" button
The calculator will then display your estimated daily calorie needs to maintain your current weight.
Formula Explained
The calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is one of the most accurate methods for estimating calorie needs. The formula is:
For women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age in years) - 161
Where BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the number of calories your body needs to perform basic functions at rest. The calculator then adjusts this BMR based on your activity level to estimate your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE).
The activity level multipliers are:
- Sedentary (little or no exercise): BMR × 1.2
- Lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week): BMR × 1.375
- Moderately active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week): BMR × 1.55
- Very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week): BMR × 1.725
- Extra active (very hard exercise/physical job & exercise 2x/day): BMR × 1.9
Worked Example
Let's calculate the maintenance calories for a 30-year-old woman who weighs 150 pounds, is 5'6" tall, and is moderately active.
- Convert weight to kg: 150 lbs × 0.453592 = 68.0388 kg
- Convert height to cm: 5'6" = 66 inches × 2.54 = 167.64 cm
- Calculate BMR: (10 × 68.0388) + (6.25 × 167.64) - (5 × 30) - 161 = 680.388 + 1047.75 - 150 - 161 = 1417.138 kcal/day
- Adjust for activity level (moderately active): 1417.138 × 1.55 = 2199.91 kcal/day
Therefore, this woman would need approximately 2,200 calories per day to maintain her current weight.
Interpreting Results
The result from this calculator provides your estimated Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), which represents the number of calories you burn each day through all physical activity and resting metabolism.
To maintain your weight, you should consume approximately the same number of calories as your TDEE. If you consume fewer calories, you'll lose weight. If you consume more, you'll gain weight.
Remember that individual results may vary based on factors like muscle mass, body composition, and metabolism. This calculator provides an estimate, not an exact figure.
Once you have your maintenance calories, you can use this information to create a balanced diet plan or adjust your exercise routine to achieve your health goals.
