Calculate Money Worth in Past
This calculator helps you determine how much money from a past year is worth today, adjusted for inflation. It's useful for comparing historical salaries, prices, or savings with current values.
How to Use This Calculator
To calculate the adjusted value of past money:
- Enter the original amount of money from the past
- Select the year when that money was earned or spent
- Choose the location (US or UK) for appropriate inflation data
- Click "Calculate" to see the adjusted value
The calculator uses historical inflation rates to show what that amount would be worth today, accounting for the purchasing power lost to inflation.
Formula Explained
The calculation uses the formula for inflation-adjusted present value:
Adjusted Value = Original Amount × (1 + Inflation Rate)(Current Year - Original Year)
Where:
- Original Amount - The amount of money from the past
- Inflation Rate - The average annual inflation rate for the selected period
- Current Year - The year you're comparing to (defaults to current year)
- Original Year - The year when the original amount was earned or spent
The calculator uses historical inflation data from government sources to calculate the appropriate adjustment factor.
Worked Example
Suppose you earned $1,000 in 2010 and want to know its value today (2023) in the US:
- Original Amount: $1,000
- Original Year: 2010
- Location: US
Using average US inflation rates from 2010 to 2023 (approximately 2.5% per year):
$1,000 × (1 + 0.025)(2023-2010) = $1,000 × 1.132 = $1,132
This means $1,000 from 2010 would be worth about $1,132 today in the US.
Interpreting Results
The adjusted value shows how much purchasing power your original amount had today. A higher adjusted value means inflation had less impact on that amount, while a lower value indicates significant erosion of purchasing power.
Consider these factors when interpreting results:
- Different locations have different inflation rates
- Inflation varies by category (food, housing, services)
- Extreme years may have higher or lower inflation than averages
- For very old amounts, additional factors like currency changes may apply
