Calculate Living Space Into Wall Space to Paint

Reviewed by Calculator Editorial Team

Painting walls is a common home improvement task, but calculating how much wall space you need to paint can be tricky. Our calculator helps you convert your living space dimensions into the total paintable wall area, accounting for windows, doors, and other non-paintable areas.

How to Use This Calculator

Using our wall space calculator is simple:

  1. Enter the dimensions of your living space (length and width) in feet or meters.
  2. Specify the height of your walls in feet or meters.
  3. Enter the number of windows and doors in your room.
  4. Adjust the average size of windows and doors if needed.
  5. Click "Calculate" to see your total paintable wall area.

The calculator will provide you with the total wall area that needs to be painted, which you can then use to determine how much paint you'll need.

Formula Explained

The calculation follows these steps:

Total Wall Area Formula

The total wall area is calculated by multiplying the perimeter of your room by the height of the walls:

Total Wall Area = (2 × (Length + Width)) × Height

Paintable Area Formula

The paintable area is the total wall area minus the area occupied by windows and doors:

Paintable Area = Total Wall Area - (Number of Windows × Window Area) - (Number of Doors × Door Area)

This formula accounts for the fact that windows and doors don't need to be painted, so they're subtracted from the total wall area.

Worked Example

Let's say you have a room that's 12 feet long and 10 feet wide, with 8-foot-high walls, 2 windows, and 1 door. The average window size is 3 square feet and the average door size is 7 square feet.

Example Calculation

Total Wall Area: (2 × (12 + 10)) × 8 = 416 square feet

Total Non-Paintable Area: (2 × 3) + (1 × 7) = 13 square feet

Paintable Area: 416 - 13 = 403 square feet

This means you'll need to paint approximately 403 square feet of wall space in this room.

Tips for Painting Walls

Before You Start

  • Measure your walls carefully to ensure accurate calculations.
  • Account for any obstructions like electrical outlets, switches, or moldings.
  • Consider whether you'll be painting the ceiling as well.

During Painting

  • Use a ladder safely and securely.
  • Apply primer before paint for better adhesion.
  • Work in small sections to avoid drips and uneven coverage.

After Painting

  • Let paint dry completely before touching surfaces.
  • Clean brushes and rollers immediately after use.
  • Store leftover paint properly to maintain quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure my walls for painting?
Use a tape measure to measure the length and width of each wall, then multiply these measurements to get the area of each wall.
What's the difference between total wall area and paintable area?
The total wall area includes all walls, while the paintable area excludes windows, doors, and other non-paintable surfaces.
How much paint do I need for a certain area?
Paint coverage varies by product, but generally you'll need about 350-400 square feet per gallon for most interior walls.
Should I paint the ceiling as well?
Whether to paint the ceiling depends on your preferences and the current condition of your ceiling. It's often a good idea to paint it for a complete refresh.
How do I calculate paintable area for multiple rooms?
Calculate the paintable area for each room separately, then add them together to get the total paintable area for your entire space.
