Calculate Health Dnd 5th
How to Calculate Health Points
In Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, a character's health is measured in Hit Points (HP). These points determine how much damage your character can take before falling unconscious. Calculating your HP involves several factors including your character's level, hit dice, and constitution modifier.
Key Components
Your total HP is calculated by:
- Rolling your hit dice for each level
- Adding your constitution modifier for each level
- Adding your maximum hit points for your race or class
Hit Dice
Each class has a specific hit die that determines the base amount of HP you gain at each level. Common hit dice include:
- d4 (1d4) - Sorcerer, Warlock
- d6 (1d6) - Monk
- d8 (1d8) - Fighter, Paladin, Ranger
- d10 (1d10) - Bard, Cleric, Druid, Rogue, Warlock
- d12 (1d12) - Barbarian
Constitution Modifier
Your constitution modifier is calculated from your character's constitution score. This modifier is added to your HP at each level. The formula is:
For example, if your constitution score is 16, your modifier would be +3.
The Formula
The complete formula for calculating total hit points is:
Note: Some classes and races have special rules that modify this calculation. Always check your character sheet for any additional bonuses or modifications.
Worked Example
Let's calculate the HP for a level 5 Fighter with a constitution score of 16.
- Determine hit die: Fighter uses d10 (1d10)
- Calculate constitution modifier: (16 - 10) / 2 = +3
- Calculate base HP: (1d10 × 5) + (3 × 5) = 5d10 + 15
- Assume we rolled 5, 3, 6, 2, 4 for the 5d10: 5 + 3 + 6 + 2 + 4 = 20
- Add constitution modifier: 20 + 15 = 35
- Add race/class bonus (assuming +2 from race): 35 + 2 = 37
This character would have 37 total hit points at level 5.
| Level | Hit Die Roll | Constitution | Race Bonus | Total HP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 8 | +3 | +2 | 13 |
| 2 | 6 | +3 | +2 | 24 |
| 3 | 7 | +3 | +2 | 34 |
| 4 | 5 | +3 | +2 | 42 |
| 5 | 4 | +3 | +2 | 49 |
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between temporary HP and regular HP?
- Temporary HP is a separate pool that absorbs damage before your regular HP. It doesn't count toward your total HP and disappears at the end of the encounter.
- Can I have negative HP?
- Yes, but when your HP reaches 0, you're unconscious and at risk of dying. If you drop to -1 HP, you die immediately.
- How do I calculate HP for a multiclass character?
- For multiclass characters, you calculate HP separately for each class and add them together. Use the hit die from your primary class for the first level, then alternate hit dice for each additional level.
- What happens if I roll a 1 on my hit die?
- Rolling a 1 on your hit die is very bad luck. Some DMs allow you to re-roll it, while others require you to take the 1. This is a risk you take when playing a character with a low hit die.
