Calculate your character's health in Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition with our comprehensive health calculator. Determine hit points, hit dice, and health progression for your character.

How to Calculate Health in D&D 5e

Health in D&D 5e is determined by hit points (HP) and hit dice. Your character's maximum HP is calculated based on their Constitution modifier and class levels. Hit dice determine how much HP your character can recover when resting.

Key Formulas

Hit Points at Level 1: Class HP + Constitution Modifier

Hit Points at Higher Levels: Class HP per level × (Level - 1) + Constitution Modifier × Level

Hit Dice: 1d8 per level for most classes, 1d10 for fighters, 1d12 for paladins and rangers

Use the calculator on the right to determine your character's health based on their class, level, and Constitution score.

Hit Points (HP)

Hit points represent a combination of physical fitness, resilience, and luck. They are the metric that determines whether your character lives or dies in combat.

Calculating Hit Points

  1. Determine your character's class and level
  2. Calculate your Constitution modifier (Con Mod)
  3. For level 1: HP = Class HP + Con Mod
  4. For higher levels: HP = (Class HP per level × (Level - 1)) + (Con Mod × Level)

Example: A level 3 fighter with a Constitution score of 16 (Con Mod +3) would have:

Level 1 HP: 10 (class HP) + 3 = 13 HP

Levels 2-3 HP: (6 × 2) + (3 × 3) = 12 + 9 = 21 HP

Total HP: 13 + 21 = 34 HP

Hit Dice

Hit dice determine how much HP your character can recover when taking a short or long rest. Each class has a different hit die size.

Class Hit Die HP per Level
Fighter d10 10
Paladin d10 10
Ranger d10 10
Cleric d8 8
Rogue d8 8
Wizard d6 6

At the end of a short rest, you can spend one or more Hit Dice to regain HP. The maximum number of Hit Dice you can spend at once equals your proficiency bonus.

Health Progression

Your character's health improves as they gain levels. This is represented by both increased maximum HP and the ability to recover more HP through Hit Dice.

Key Progression Points

  • Level 1: Base HP + Constitution modifier
  • Level 4: Ability to regain HP on a short rest
  • Level 5: Increase in maximum HP
  • Level 11: Additional HP increase
  • Level 17: Maximum HP increase

Health progression is crucial for maintaining your character's survivability in combat. Higher levels mean more HP and better recovery capabilities.

Examples

Example 1: Fighter

A level 5 fighter with a Constitution score of 14 (Con Mod +2) would have:

  • Level 1 HP: 10 + 2 = 12 HP
  • Levels 2-5 HP: (6 × 4) + (2 × 5) = 24 + 10 = 34 HP
  • Total HP: 12 + 34 = 46 HP

Example 2: Rogue

A level 3 rogue with a Constitution score of 12 (Con Mod +1) would have:

  • Level 1 HP: 8 + 1 = 9 HP
  • Levels 2-3 HP: (5 × 2) + (1 × 3) = 10 + 3 = 13 HP
  • Total HP: 9 + 13 = 22 HP

FAQ

How do I calculate my character's hit points?

Hit points are calculated based on your class, level, and Constitution modifier. For level 1, it's class HP plus your Con Mod. For higher levels, it's class HP per level multiplied by (Level - 1) plus your Con Mod multiplied by your level.

What are hit dice and how do they work?

Hit dice determine how much HP you can recover when taking a short or long rest. Each class has a different hit die size (d6, d8, or d10). You can spend one Hit Die per short rest to regain HP, with a maximum equal to your proficiency bonus.

How does Constitution affect my character's health?

Constitution affects both your maximum HP and your ability to recover HP. A higher Constitution score means more HP at each level and better recovery through Hit Dice.

Can I have temporary hit points?

Yes, temporary hit points are separate from your maximum HP and are lost first when you take damage. They are often granted by spells, magic items, or special abilities.
