Blood Alcohol Level Ontario Calculator
Use this calculator to determine your blood alcohol content (BAC) in Ontario. Enter your weight, number of drinks, and time since drinking to estimate your BAC level and understand the legal implications.
How to Use This Calculator
To calculate your blood alcohol level in Ontario:
- Enter your weight in kilograms
- Select your gender
- Enter the number of standard drinks consumed
- Enter the number of hours since your first drink
- Click "Calculate" to see your estimated BAC
The calculator uses the Widmark formula, which is commonly used to estimate blood alcohol content. The results are approximate and should not be used for legal purposes.
Formula Explained
The blood alcohol content (BAC) is calculated using the Widmark formula:
BAC = (A × 5.14 / W × r) - (0.015 × H)
Where:
- A = Total alcohol consumed in grams
- W = Body weight in kilograms
- r = Alcohol distribution ratio (0.68 for men, 0.55 for women)
- H = Time since drinking in hours
Standard drinks are defined as:
- 12 oz of beer (5% alcohol)
- 5 oz of wine (12% alcohol)
- 1.5 oz of 80-proof distilled spirits (40% alcohol)
Worked Example
Let's calculate the BAC for a 70 kg male who has consumed 3 standard drinks and it has been 1 hour since his first drink.
1. Calculate total alcohol consumed: 3 drinks × 14 grams = 42 grams
2. Apply the Widmark formula: (42 × 5.14 / 70 × 0.68) - (0.015 × 1) = 0.103 - 0.015 = 0.088 or 8.8%
This person's estimated BAC is 0.088 or 8.8%.
Interpreting Results
Blood alcohol levels are typically interpreted as follows:
- 0.00-0.02%: No impairment
- 0.03-0.05%: Minor impairment
- 0.06-0.09%: Moderate impairment
- 0.10-0.15%: Significant impairment
- 0.16-0.20%: Severe impairment
- 0.21% and above: Life-threatening
Remember that individual tolerance varies and factors like food intake, metabolism, and hydration can affect results.
