Baby Name Calculator

Reviewed by Calculator Editorial Team

Choosing a baby name is one of the most important decisions parents make. Our baby name calculator helps you find the perfect name by analyzing popularity, meaning, and suitability based on your preferences.

How the Baby Name Calculator Works

The baby name calculator evaluates potential names based on three key factors: popularity, meaning, and suitability. Each factor is scored out of 100, and the overall score is the average of these three scores.

Overall Name Score Formula

Overall Score = (Popularity Score + Meaning Score + Suitability Score) / 3

Let's look at each component in more detail:

Name Popularity Analysis

The popularity score evaluates how common a name is in the United States. Names that are neither too common nor too rare typically score higher.

Popularity Score Formula

Popularity Score = 100 - (|(Rank - 1000)/1000| × 100)

Where Rank is the position of the name in the Social Security Administration's list of most popular names.

For example, if "Emma" has a rank of 1, its popularity score would be:

Popularity Score = 100 - (|(1 - 1000)/1000| × 100) = 100 - (999/1000 × 100) = 100 - 99.9 = 0.1

Note

Popularity data is based on the most recent available Social Security Administration records.

Name Meaning Analysis

The meaning score evaluates how well a name's meaning aligns with your preferences. You can select from several meaning categories, and the calculator will assign a score based on how well the name fits your chosen categories.

Meaning Score Formula

Meaning Score = (Number of matching meaning categories / Total meaning categories selected) × 100

For example, if you select 3 meaning categories and a name matches 2 of them, its meaning score would be:

Meaning Score = (2 / 3) × 100 = 66.67

Name Suitability Score

The suitability score evaluates how well a name fits your personal preferences, such as gender, length, and starting letter. Each suitability factor is scored out of 100, and the overall suitability score is the average of these individual scores.

Suitability Score Formula

Suitability Score = (Gender Score + Length Score + Letter Score) / 3

Let's look at each suitability factor:

Gender Score

The gender score evaluates how well a name fits the gender you've selected. Names that are traditionally associated with the selected gender score higher.

Gender Score Formula

Gender Score = (Number of names in the same gender category / Total names in the same gender category) × 100

Length Score

The length score evaluates how well a name's length matches your preference. You can select a preferred name length range, and names within that range will score higher.

Length Score Formula

Length Score = 100 if name length is within your preferred range, otherwise 0

Letter Score

The letter score evaluates how well a name starts with your preferred starting letter. Names that start with your preferred letter score higher.

Letter Score Formula

Letter Score = 100 if name starts with your preferred letter, otherwise 0
