Healthy Weight Gain Guidelines
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends that a healthy pregnancy weight gain should be between 25-35 pounds (11.3-15.9 kg) for women with a normal BMI before pregnancy.
The weight gain is divided into three trimesters:
- First trimester: 1-5 pounds (0.45-2.27 kg)
- Second trimester: 1-4 pounds (0.45-1.82 kg) per week
- Third trimester: 1-5 pounds (0.45-2.27 kg) per week
For women with a BMI under 18.5 or over 30 before pregnancy, the recommended weight gain may be different.
Calculator Formula
The calculator uses the following formula to determine your recommended weight gain range:
For example, if you weighed 140 pounds before pregnancy and are in week 20:
Your total weight gain should be between 25-35 pounds (11.3-15.9 kg) of the recommended 315 pounds, so your healthy weight gain range would be 290-325 pounds.
